Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world

NELSON
MANDELA

Rosetta Steps Education Center offers schooling for children from preschool to Grade 6. Our students primarily come from families where more than 50 percent of parents are unlettered and amenities such as electricity, computers, and television are not available to support learning. Our classes are all taught in English, and we seek to address these challenges by adapting international standard reading and writing materials so that our curriculum is appropriate for the context of the lives of our students, and by equipping our teachers with all of the necessary resources to provide a good classroom environment.

In addition to the academic needs of our students, we also seek to support their mental and emotional health and to offer a safe place where every child feels known and valued. All of our classes are interactive and fun and have an emphasis on creating an atmosphere which promotes retention and interaction. We encourage the “I Do”, “We Do” and” You Do” concept of foundational learning. Many of our students would otherwise have been held at home to carry out chores or child labour activities.

PRESCHOOL (ABC1 and ABC2)

Our preschool program is for children from 18 months to 3 years old, and is balanced between academic and social skills. Our dynamic team of preschool teachers, headed by Johnetta Anderson, ensures that learning is fun, creative, and exciting, and sets up young learners for success in future classes.

Our academic curriculum for preschoolers is focused on recognizing, reciting, and writing the alphabets and numbers including learning letter sounds and how to speak clearly. The students also practice manual skills such as how to trace lines and hold their pencils and crayons properly.

Social skills are highly emphasized in our preschool program. Our students learn to sort objects, play with others, follow rules and instructions, identify their emotions and feelings, and focus and engage in activities for 15 minutes or more.

KINDERGARDEN (K1 and K2)

K1 to K2, our junior and senior kindergarden classes, are a time of growth and expansion and preparation for the adventure that begins in grade school.

To support growth during these critical formative years, our teachers have developed a curriculum that blends play, singing, and craft making with introductions to more advanced academic skills. Students are introduced to:

  • Basic Mathematics

  • Language Arts

  • Phonemic Awareness

  • Science and Exploration

  • Social Studies

  • Vocabulary Development

GRADE SCHOOL (GRADES 1-6)

Our grade school curriculum is based on a combination of the Revised Liberian National Curriculum in combination with the Common Core State Standards developed in the United States. This ensures that our students meet all national requirements for education and are exposed to a set of high quality academic programming in mathematics, english, language arts, and literacy.

Our learning goals clearly outline what a student should be able to know and to do at the end of each school year, and our experienced teaching staff support our young learners holistically to help them succeed. Subjects taught include:

  • Commerce

  • Computer Science

  • English

  • Handwriting
